Charakter krajiny, v ktorej ľudia žijú, je dôležitým ukazovateľom kvality ich života. Vypovedá o historických súvislostiach a zodpovednosti obyvateľov. Na jednej strane má krajina slúžiť požiadavkám ľudí, na druhej strane by k nej ľudia mali pristupovať zodpovedne a ohľaduplne. Práve takúto rovnováhu hľadá Európsky dohovor o krajine, ktorý bol prijatý v októbri roku 2000, a keďže k nemu pristúpila aj Slovenská republika, je záväzný pre nás všetkých. Smutnou realitou ostáva, že väčšina ľudí v dnešnom svete je primárne naprogramovaná na uspokojovanie vlastných potrieb a potreby krajiny by sa na rebríčku životných hodnôt pravdepodobne nedostali ani na pomyselnú poslednú priečku.
